They say that when it comes to adopting a pet, you don’t choose your companion–your companion chooses you. That was certainly the case when it came to Rubio, a stray dog who was known by locals to wander the streets of Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Olivia Sievers is a German flight attendant who has to travel from Germany to Argentina regularly for her job, and during one trip to the South American country she made an unlikely friend.
Sievers was headed to her hotel when she saw a stray dog, and she stopped for a moment to give him some scraps of food and play with him. She expected that that would be the last time she saw him, but after she turned to leave the pup followed her.
“I tried to change my way because I didn’t want that he follow me back to the hotel,” she told local news outlet Noticiero Trece. “But it was not possible. He always came back and followed me. I tried for one hour, but he always watched me and followed me. He was really happy that somebody gave him attention.”
Sievers named the dog Rubio, and she gave him a blanket to keep him warm before she left to return home to Germany. She also contacted a local rescue organization, who took the dog in and found him a home with a loving family.
But Rubio wasn’t satisfied with just a home; he had his heart set on going home with his newfound friend. He escaped from his new house and returned to Sievers’ hotel, waiting outside the front doors watching for her.
This went on for months, and Sievers could always expect to see Rubio waiting patiently for her at the same hotel whenever she traveled to Argentina.
After several trips, she realized that she couldn’t go back to Germany alone. She filled out the necessary paperwork to bring him home with her, and finally Rubio’s patience paid off.
Now Rubio is living the good life with Sievers, and she is making sure to spoil him with his very own yard, trips to the beach, and, of course, lots of love.
And in return, she knows that she has a loyal friend who will always be waiting for her at the end of a long day.
